Week 7 Reading Diary B: Congo Unit

These stories are from the Congo Unit.

How The Spider Won and Lost Nzambi’s Daughter: Here is another story in which people work together well for a common goal, but then end up turning on each other at the end! It’s so interesting that many Western stories seem to have the opposite theme. People fight and refuse to cooperate at the beginning, but then they realize that they all need each other to be successful and end up working together to reach the happy ending.

The Rabbit and the Antelope: The poor antelope was tricked by the rabbit for a very long time. I’m not quite sure why the rabbit suggested using that medicine to see which one was stealing the food when he knew the medicine would point to him. I wonder also if the antelope knew the rabbit would not be able to resist drinking from the well and was just trying to give him one last chance to redeem himself so the antelope wouldn’t feel at all guilty about finally killing the rabbit. The scene at the very end when the rabbit gradually got more and more stuck to the figure was hilarious (until the antelope finally killed him).

The Leopard and the Crocodile: The man in this story was certainly very clever to pit his two frenemies against each other, but I don’t think it’s very fair that both these animals fed the man and his family and then he sent them to their deaths. I wonder what the man thinks he will do to feed his family now that his two hunters are dead!
